We saw two problems with our packaging. Our bags were made from non-renewable materials, and they sometimes end up as litter. We didn’t like that.
The first step to reducing the environmental impact of our packaging was to just use less. Over the past five years we’ve eliminated five billion square inches of packaging by reducing the materials we use by 10%. It was a good start. But to truly address the impact of our packaging we had to create a better bag. And guess what? We found the answer in nature.
“There’s enormous opportunity to reduce our use of non-renewable resources by using plant-based materials,” says Tony Knoerzer, Frito-Lay’s Director of Sustainable Packaging.
Today, 33% of every 10 1/2 oz. size SunChips® bag is made with renewable, plant based materials. This is our first step to reduce the amount of non-renewable materials we use for packaging.
But the really exciting news is that in 2010, we plan to introduce the first fully compostable chip bag of its kind. See for yourself in this time lapse video showing the bag disappear!
These innovative bags are designed to fully decompose in about 14 weeks when placed in a hot, active compost bin or pile.
So you eat the chips. The earth eats the bag. And we all live in a cleaner world.
