HOUSTON (Sept. 28, 2022) – As the rising cost of food, rent and utilities continues to impact hardworking families in the Greater Houston area, a group of local nonprofits and corporate partners came together recently for a food distribution event. Hosted by Frito-Lay, United Way of Greater Houston, H-E-B and the Houston Food Bank, more than 500 families received a box of nonperishable food items and produce, Frito-Lay snack packs, Gamesa product, and a $50 H-E-B gift card.

“No family should have to choose between putting food on the table or paying for other basic needs. This is why we are proud to support the United Way of Greater Houston and the Houston Food Bank in providing much needed meals and resources to our community,” said Eddie Battenfied, customer management director for Frito-Lay. “This local community is ultimately where many of our associates live and work, and we will continue to support its well-being”.

According to data from the most recent United Way ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) Report, 14% of Greater Houston’s households are living on incomes below the federal poverty threshold, and another 33% of working households don’t earn enough to afford basic necessities of life. Food distribution events allow families to experience some relief in their budget when resources are stretched thin.

“When hardworking families and individuals are forced to make tough choices, such as deciding between quality childcare or paying the rent, it can have long-term consequences for those families,” said Amanda McMillian, president and CEO, United Way of Greater Houston. “Our hope with these events is to ease some of those tough choices, and we’re so grateful to our partners who saw the need and have come together to make a difference in our community.”

Held at Impact Church of Houston, each household also received information on the 211 Texas/United Way HELPLINE as well as SNAP applications for those needing additional assistance.
